This piece was premiered 11-May-2002 by Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra, Bruce Lauffer conductor. (Orchestra (2-2-2-2, 4, 3-2-1, 3 perc, string choir), 4:00) listen String Quartet No. 1 rent (F. 103) The first movement is a quasi-12-tone piece which captures dark, intense emotions. A slow, mournful movement in 5/8 follows, which portrays a funeral procession. The final bouyant movement transforms the troubles and mourning of the first two movements into a joyful climax. The Trout in the Aquarium opens with a musical portrait of the aquarium, borrowed from Saint Saëns’ charming Carnival of the Animals. Adagio con la letargia di due gatti durante un caldo pomeriggio d’estate This movement, whose title translates: slowly, with the lethargy of two cats on a hot summer’s afternoon, introduces the two felines napping just outside the aquarium. Premiered by the Foss High School Orchestra, Andrea Bryant director, in a benefit concert at Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, Benaroya Hall in Seattle on May 15, 2003. This event was sponsored by the Composer Residency Program of the Seattle Composer’s Alliance in conjunction with Gilda’s Club of Seattle. Inspired by a recent trip, this piece blends impressionistic depictions of sunlight streaming through stained glass with sixteenth-century polyphony culminating in the joy of feeling the Lord’s presence.
