Overview

Choral Music by Northwest Composers · Radiance (formerly Vox 16), directed by Markdavin Obenza

Locally Sourced showcases a cappella choral music by twelve Northwest composers, performed by Vox 16, a sixteen-voice professional ensemble founded by Markdavin Obenza to develop emerging talent for the Byrd Ensemble and other professional choirs in the Seattle area.

The album features my Kyrie from Missa Dramatica (Missa Brevis No. 2). I had started composing the mass in 2017, and the Kyrie was the first completed movement. When Vox 16 put out a call for scores for their second recording project—one focused on Northwest composers—I submitted the Kyrie, and was thrilled to have it included.

My connection with Vox 16 began a few years earlier, when friends from the Cascadian Chorale started singing with this newly formed ensemble. I had previously written Break, Break, Break for their open call for scores, and the working relationship with Markdavin that grew from that collaboration ultimately led to the Byrd Ensemble recording of Stories.
